1/24/2012 Public Meeting: Breckinridge Rec Center Project

PUBLIC MEETING RE:BRECKINRIDGE RECREATION CENTER JOINT AGENCY PROJECT

We need to have good attendance at this meeting Thursday night to show that we support a recreation center at Breckenridge Park.
Please attend if you can!

http://www.murphytx.org/SiteContent/72/documents/NR/Jan/MARC_Public_Meeting.pdf

The City of Murphy, in conjunction with the City of Richardson, is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012 at 7 p.m. to gather public input on the proposed Multi-Agency Recreation Center (MARC), according to Murphy City Secretary Aimee Nemer.

The meeting will be held at the Miller Elementary School Cafeteria, 5651 Coventry Drive in Richardson.

The proposed MARC, planned for Richardson’s Breckinridge Park, is still in the conceptual stage and its stated purpose is to “provide recreational opportunities to members of both communities.”

Officials of both cities are seeking public input into the concept, and will discuss various aspects of the proposal including:

· sharing in planning the facility between the communities;

· exploring opportunities for shared capital costs;

· exploring opportunities for shared operations;

· exploring funding opportunities; and

· planning for a permanent relationship between the communities.

The jointly-sponsored public meeting comes ten days after the City Councils of Murphy and Richardson held a combined meeting to discuss the MARC at Murphy’s Community Room.

“The public is cordially invited to attend the Jan. 26 meeting to share their ideas, suggestions and preferences on the feasibility of the MARC,” said Nemer.

10/13/2011 It's that time of year- Pre-emergent weed control!

It's that time a year - be a good neighbor and keep your yard beautiful!  Download this PDF and put in on your calendar!

http://www.heatherridgeestates.org/cgi-bin/documents.pl?action=view&docid=1318513065&dir=documents

FERTILIZING SCHEDULE 3 time a year*

*Note: The below 3 fertilization tables are based on you using slow-release formulas.

1

Late March-Early April

Fertilize:  apply slow-release 3-1-2 ratio fertilizers (recommended formulations 19-5-9, 19-4-10, 21-7-14, 15-5-10)

Some would apply Weed and Feed here, but we recommend applying a pre emergent weed control in February, and applying only a fertilizer here.

2

Late June-Early Jul

Fertilize:  apply slow-release 3-1-2 ratio fertilizers (recommended formulations 19-5-9, 19-4-10, 21-7-14, 15-5-10)

June - early September:  if turfgrass looks yellow (chlorosis) or necrotic, use an application of either granular or liquid iron. Once a year, should be enough.

3

Late September-November

Winterize:  apply winterizer formulas for winter hardiness. Ratios will vary, but make sure they are "winter" or "fall" formulas designed for southern grasses.

(examples: 18-6-12, 8-12-16 will make lawns winter-hardy)

PRE-EMERGENT WEED CONTROL SCHEDULE - 3 times a year

*Note: A pre-emergent herbicide controls weeds before they germinate (start growing). A post-emergent herbicide, like Weed and Feed, kills weeds after they germinate.

1

February - March

Use the pre-emergent controls for grassy weeds again, to prevent such weeds as Crabgrass, Goosegrass and Dallisgrass from popping up late in the spring and summer. Again, use the grassy pre-emergent like Amaze, Betasan, Balan, or Treflan.

2

May - Early June

Once more application of a grassy pre-emergent like Amaze, Betasan, Balan, or Treflan will keep any fall weeds from invading from August on.

3

Late October - Early November

Use two (2) different pre-emergent herbicides, to prevent the weeds that we experience in February and March. First is a pre-emergent for broadleaf weeds like clover with Portrait or Gallery. Second use a pre-emergent for grassy weeds like poa anna or annual bluegrass with Amaze, Betasan, Balan or Trefla.

11/25/2010 Giving Thanks

As we finalize our preparations for Thanksgiving, we find ourselves reflecting on the year and counting many things for which we are thankful.  Gracious and supporting friends and neighbors are right at the top of our list.

In mid-September, we returned to our "new" home.  The project is finally nearing completion.  Many months have passed since the lightening strike/fire, and we know that we are not the only ones who have lived through the many phases of the rebuild.  At times we felt the construction would never end.  The thought probably crossed your mind, too!  And the orange dumpster. . . . .  be honest.  Did you use it as a landmark for giving directions when someone was coming to your house?  Do you miss it?  Ok, we're joking.  You have to find humor in these things.

All kidding aside, we thank you all for your patience, concern, support, well wishes and welcome backs.  This community has been wonderful and understanding and somewhere that we wanted to return.  So from our home to yours, thank you, and have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.

The Entys -

8/8/2010 ZONING CHANGE REQUEST IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Date: Sunday, August 8, 2010 AM

I know everyone is busy with summer activities but please take the time to read this email. I contacted you recently concerning a vote the Richardson City Council was taking on a zoning request change allowing for a multifamily apartment complex with 170 units for senior living to be built at the corner of North Star and Renner Road.  The  council voted four to two in favor of the complex.  There was very little representation from our community at the meeting.  One final vote has to be taken on  Monday, August 9 at the Council meeting.  The Richardson City Council will take what is often a routine vote on a "Consent Agenda".  These are items that have been considered in prior council meetings and are grouped for final official approval by the Council.

The approval of  the development of the multifamily apartment complex at the corner of North Star and Renner will be embedded within the consent agenda and will likely be passed unless we, as concerned residents, make a showing at the meeting to ask for some clarification to find out if this is what we really want.

The meeting will be held at 7: 30, tomorrow night, at the City Hall/Civic Center,  located at 411 W. Arapaho Rd. on the southwest corner of Arapaho Road and Central Expressway.

If you can't attend, you can still make a difference by clicking on the following, https://discovery.cor.gov/Public/IS/EMailForm.nsf/CouncilCard?OpenForm and recording your opposition.  Also, you can send an email to the city secretary at pamela.schmidt@cor.gov and ask for the item to be removed from the consent agenda for further discussion and also express your opposition.

This facility is intended by its developers to be marketed, like similar of its properties, as an independent senior living facility.  Note that this is not the typical senior living facility that many of you may be familiar with, that provide for assisted living, meal preparation, and a full program of community activities.  Rather, it is intended for seniors who are independent and do not need extra support for health concerns, meals, or residential security. It will basically be an apartment complex for independent seniors and the rents being charged appear to be below market rates.

There are a number of very confusing aspects to this development that are disconcerting or are not well understood:

-We do know that the developers are receiving a federal grant that requires that there is a maximum income level for the residents of $33,000 annually and that the facility is required under the federal assistance to meet affordability requirements.

-We also understand that the type of senior living facility that is to be built, despite the intentions of the owner, does not have to be rented exclusively to seniors over 55.  Only one resident of each unit need be 55 or older, and up to 20% of the facility could be rented to those who are not seniors.

-We have received information that, under the federal assistance from the U.S. Dept of Housing and Urban Development (which is apparently a loan)  the facility is supposed to remain an independent senior living center for a long time, but we do not have clarity on whether a subsequent owner of the property under certain conditions is obligated to retain this condition.

-The developer's presentations and discussions with many surrounding residents has led to the belief that all of the remaining land at the southwest corner will now be fully developed including retail along Renner Road but the developer has no development plans at this time for what will be a small unused parcel of land on Renner.

This is a corner with high density to begin with, and many have concerns that more multifamily, despite any well-intentioned development targeted to seniors, is still too much density at this corner and should be placed elsewhere in the vicinity.  Further, there is still confusion regarding how any future use (or current use) could be altered to react to lack of senior resident occupancy.

We would like support Monday night to request that the Council take this zoning item out of the consent agenda for separate discussion, and decline the approval of the zoning change -- or at the very least, defer it until we have our questions answered.

Sincerely,

Joni Sicking

10/22/2009 Breckinridge Park Incident - Dogs off leashes

Dear Neighbors,

On October 19th, one of our neighbors, Chie Smith, was walking her three dogs in Breckinridge Park when a pack of three dogs off leash ran up to her and her dogs.  One of these dogs attacked her smallest dog, Gizmo.  It also bit Chie as she tried to help her dog.  It also bit her larger dog, Mia, as it tried to help the smaller dog.  All three of them were hurt and it was a very frightening experience.

The owner of the three dogs eventually caught up to his dogs and was shocked at the aggressiveness of his dog.  He was very apologetic and offered to pay the vet bills.  The vet bill was over $800.00.  Also, his dog will be quarantined for 10 days.

It is also illegal to have your dogs off leash in Breckinridge Park or anywhere in Richardson for that matter.

Please avoid all of this and keep your dogs on a leash in the park at all times.

No matter how sweet and gentle your dogs are-- they can become fearful and aggressive in new situations and places.  New dog introductions- whether welcomed or NOT—are tense situations and can easily turn into fighting.

Many people have become so frightened by these loose dogs that they are uncomfortable using the beautiful park in their own neighborhood.

It is also cruel to local wildlife to have dogs running loose attacking and killing wild animals in the park.

Please follow the Law and keep you dogs on leashes,

Sincerely, Marlene Lagerquist

10/14/2009 Millwood Property Update

We are sure you have been wondering about the lull of activity and are wondering what’s up….  We had to make a decision over the past few weeks to either sell the property as-is or re-build.  We hope you will be happy to know we have decided to re-build.  The process started today, the dumpster is back, and it will take at least 6 months depending upon the weather.  The remainder of the roof and burned framing will be removed, and then the rebuild can begin.

Carolee Kamesh of Prestige Designer Homes has been signed to rebuild our home.  She is a local green builder that is currently building homes a little further away on Renner Road.  You are welcome to stop by to say hello.    Thank again for your thoughts, prayers and well wishes.  We again apologize in advance for the inconvenience of it all.
Cheers, Steve, Lora Jean and Lucas

Help keep our neighborhood safe by knowing you neighbors!

Come out and meet your neighbors and visitors from the City of Richardson.  Just a reminder that National Night Out is Tuesday, October 13th until 8 pm.  Once again it will be on Northridge Drive at the front of the neighborhood.  There will a bounce house and food. See you there!

8/3/2009 Neighborhood Fire - We'll be OK!

Dear Neighbors,

Thank you for all of your phone calls, emails, thoughts and prayers this week after a lightning strike started a fire in our home.  We are all OK.  Our home was severely damaged, but we believe there is enough of the lower level structure to rebuild the HRE’s Sotherby model home.

The strike occurred around 6:20 a.m.  It ripped a hole in the roof and ignited the attic above the front door stain glass windows.  Lora Jean was at LA Fitness.  The big dog, Lucas and Steve were home and awoke early as this storm rolled through.   Thanks to our alert neighbors one street back, the Alba family sprang into action after Lorenzo smelled smoke. They immediately knew that it was our house.  Vandi checked the wind pattern and began banging on doors.  Steve and Vandi immediately called 911, but for some reason dispatch was confused about the Millwood Drive location.  After a 911 call-back, Steve handed his cell phone to Elias who was banging at the front door.  Steve put Lucas outside by the pool and grabbed the large fire extinguisher to fight the fire, but it was to no avail.  All hell broke loose as the ceiling filled with water and collapsed, and the house went black with smoke.  We exited stage-left.  A special THANK YOU to Elias for scooping up Lucas after he snuck back into the house in all the confusion.

The garage is the only area of the house with some remaining roof.   Thanks to the Richardson Fire Department, 5-6 fire units and the 25+ firefighters, many of our personal items were moved to areas that took in less water, and that will help the possibility of restoration.   The items that survived the fire have been packed for drying and possible restoration.

Currently we are staying the Candlewood Suites Hotel at 190 & Jupiter, which is pet-friendly.  We don’t know how long it will take to rebuild & we’re sorry that you’ll be reminded of this each time you drive into HRE’s beautiful main entryway. Once again, we are OK, insured, and will try to take this in stride.

To ALL of our neighbors - a BIG heartfelt THANK YOU.  Your kindness and generosity are humbling.  So many of our friends, neighbors and new friends have so kindly stopped their lives to reach out to us and open their hearts & homes.  How can you help?  Be patient with the rebuild and be sure to join us at the big home warming party when restoration is complete.

Gratefully yours,
Steve, Lora Jean and Lucas

7/20/2009 Richardson Cellphone Emergency Notification System
Community Emergency Notification System
As a reminder, the City of Richardson implemented the Community Emergency Notification System in March of this year. We have completed testing for 3 of 4 quadrants for this year and our next test will be in October for quadrant 4. An information page regarding the system can be accessed from the Emergency Management page at: http://www.cor.net/em. Finally, we have made a significant advancement with regard to the system. Upon the initial system roll-out, we only had access to call land-line numbers provided through our 911 database. Now, citizens can go on-line at: http://discovery.cor.gov/public/EM/R911Phone.nsf/PhoneEntry.xsp or call the information voicemail line at 972-744-4244 to register their cellular or VoIP phone numbers.

5/20/2009 What’s all the poop about at HRE?

Got your attention?  Dog owners, PLEASE pick-up after your pet.  It’s giving us responsible dog owners a bad rap!

We want to promote responsible owners who don’t mind poop scooping! Not only is it healthier for Fido, the local children, other dogs, cats, and the crotchety old neighbor’s blood pressure, it is your social responsibility as a dog owner. Non-dog owners don’t want to see sidewalks & yards littered with dog feces, and responsible dog owners despise seeing stray poop.

However distasteful, poop detail is an necessary doody — so here's a simple way to get it done. Save plastic grocery bags to recycle for the chore. Turn the bag inside out, put your hand in it as if it were a glove, gently pick up the stuff (gagging is permitted), turn the bag back around, and tie it shut. Drop it into a garbage pail. Done!  Now, wasn't that easy?

With that said, it may be impossible to re-train humans who continue to leave their dog to poop in your yard, but here are a couple tips for a possible solution:

  • Change your fertilizer.  Some animals react strongly to other animal smells and odors. If you've been using organic fertilizers try using a chemical one for a short period and vice versa.
  • Change your watering times.  If the offending dog is consistent in the time he or she turns up to relieve themselves make sure the sprinklers are already going. Even having the lawn wet prior to the animal presenting itself may be a huge deterrent.

(posted by special requests by your anxious neighbors)
